Building a Multi-Tenant ISP SaaS

Challenge

Pakistani ISPs were juggling spreadsheets, WhatsApp groups, and manual PPPoE credential creation. Subscriber churn was invisible until it was too late, and billing reconciliation consumed days every month.

No off-the-shelf product supported MikroTik API integration with Urdu-language invoicing and local payment gateways.

Solution

  • Designed a Laravel + Livewire multi-tenant architecture where each ISP gets isolated DB schemas and branded dashboards.
  • Built a MikroTik API abstraction layer (later open-sourced as mikrotik-laravel) that provisions PPPoE users, pushes queue profiles, and syncs traffic counters in near real-time.
  • Integrated local payment gateways (JazzCash, EasyPaisa) with automatic invoice generation and SMS/WhatsApp notifications.
  • Added a self-service customer portal for plan upgrades, ticket creation, and bandwidth usage graphs.

WISP / FTTHFiberX Digital· 2024

Scaling FTTH to 28 Sites

Challenge

A 28-node WISP serving 800+ subscribers was suffering from daily outages, unbalanced backhaul links, and a complete lack of network documentation. Customer complaints were climbing and the existing MSP had abandoned the project mid-rollout.

OLT and ONU provisioning was inconsistent across GPON splits, and there was no monitoring beyond ping-based SMS alerts.

Solution

  • Rebuilt the core network with BGP multihoming across two upstreams and automatic failover within 3 seconds.
  • Deployed PCQ queue trees per tower with burst rates, ensuring fair usage without hard throttling during peak hours.
  • Standardized GPON provisioning templates for OLT/ONU configs, reducing new-site onboarding from days to hours.
  • Installed a Prometheus + Grafana monitoring stack with MKTXP MikroTik exporters and Telegram alerting for offline CPEs.
  • Delivered a complete as-built topology, configuration backups in Git, and SOPs for the client's NOC team.

Exam Centre Latency Resolution

Challenge

The exam centre required stable, low-latency connectivity to UK servers for live online proctoring and candidate authentication. Existing links suffered from packet loss and RTT spikes above 200ms during peak hours.

Legacy queue configurations were causing bufferbloat, and the Cisco edge router had suboptimal route tables with no traffic engineering.

Solution

  • Replaced legacy FIFO queues with CoDel + FQ-Codel on MikroTik CCRs to eliminate bufferbloat on the 100 Mbps uplink.
  • Tuned OSPF cost metrics across redundant links to prefer lower-latency paths to the upstream provider's London peer.
  • Implemented strict DSCP markings for exam traffic (EF class) and deprioritized bulk traffic to off-peak windows.
  • Deployed continuous RTT monitoring via SmokePing and Grafana alerts to catch degradation before it affected candidates.
